Loisto settlement NGO

Loisto settlement is an Erasmus+ accredited NGO that employs ca 50
professionals from educated social youth workers to midwives and sexual
therapists based in Helsinki, Finland. Loisto runs various development projects of
professional social youth work to increase social justice and youth mental health.
The organization has no religious nor political affiliation but remains an active
participant in societal discourse around youth wellbeing and gender equality.
Loisto’s guiding values are equality and diversity, community, and trust in every
individual’s unique potential. Loisto settlement’s core mission is to work with
vulnerable youth to increase their wellbeing, prevent marginalization and support
their mental health. Our principles lie on the value of a deep and meaningful,
respectful encounter. Our slogan is: “One encounter changes the world”.

Loisto settlement is a Finnish forerunner in social youth work and has a
demonstrated history of working with a gender and culturally sensitive approach.
During the last 25 years, Loisto has created a model for Girls’ House. Girls’ House
is a method for gender sensitive youth work targeted to empower girls and young
women, offering a safe space, open free time activities and also support for
gender-based challenges such as sexual violence and honour related violence. For
12 years we also have modeled a similar gender sensitive youth center for boys
“Boys’ house”. Both models have spread nationwide and consists today of 9 Girls’
Houses and 5 Boys’ Houses, covering the biggest cities in Finland. Even though
Finland is largely known for being the Europe’s first country to grant women the
right to vote, and we have had a female president and prime minister, Finland is
statistically Europe’s most dangerous country for women.
